Since early 2000, the city has been working with an advisory group
to develop ideas and plans for the space science learning center.
Included in the group are representatives of the following organizations:
Following is a description of the advisory committee’s vision
for the learning center.
"When the Space Science Learning Center in Downey opens
on the 160-acre former Boeing/NASA site development, it will serve
people of all ages and will be recognized as an important regional
and national center of learning. It will operate as a division
of the Department of Community Services of the City of Downey
(City), and [will be] assisted in its fundraising and marketing
activities by a nonprofit organization."
"Educational programs will contribute to a more scientifically
and technologically literate citizenry, and exhibits will commemorate
the history of the aerospace industry in Downey. The Learning
Center will symbolize the multi-faceted science and technology
learning activities conducted in the building and via distance
learning throughout the United States and the world."
"The Learning Center will be a popular meeting place for
social and business groups and will be utilized throughout the
day and into the evening by youth, educators, families, and community
members participating in educational and public programs and activities."
