Maker Math Circles
For Teachers & Homeschool Parents
Math Circles
Math circles are groups that get together to learn and practice new math concepts. The Maker Math Circle here at the Space Center will focus on learning how to use hands-on “math experiments” to give you and your students intuition to build upon. We will also see how technologies like 3D printing and open source electronics can enhance math learning. Content will be teachable at a variety of levels, K-12. Sign up for the group and come to any or all of the sessions. The room will open at 4:00pm for networking, and we will work together on problems from 4:30-6:00pm.
Events are free! Space is limited so sign up soon.
Circle Leaders
Joan Horvath and Rich Cameron
Joan and Rich are the founders of Nonscriptum LLC and serve as 3D printing and maker tech consultants. Together, they have authored several books on 3D printing and its use in education and curriculum building.
2026 Meeting Dates
August 13 - Kickoff Mixer!
No content, presentation or math activities, just a chance to meet other teachers and homeschool parents and talk about what you would like to get from this community.
August 20 - Sundials & Navigation
Explore creating devices to find local time, latitude or longitude with a few measurements, and how to set up larger projects to track sun movement over one year.
September 17 - Analog Calculators
Learn how the ancient Greeks and others created simple, clever tools to calculate quantities like square roots and see what insights we can get from classical compass-and-straightedge constructions.
October 15 - Visual Probability
See fun ways to gain insight into probability and statistics with tools like dice and LEGO bricks.
November 19 - Fractals
We will create a group project that shows the mathematics of structures that are the same at many different scales.
December 10 - Math of Plants
We will explore Fibonacci series, the golden angle, and other phenomena and see how to design a plant that looks “right” versus one that looks “wrong.”
