As the national memorial to the Space Shuttle Columbia, the Columbia Memorial Space Center is dedicated to preserving the history of Downey’s aerospace program through our interactive exhibits and programming. We seek volunteers who demonstrate a strong commitment to service, dependability, and a genuine enthusiasm for our mission of “igniting a community of creative and critical thinkers.” Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds help deliver high-quality educational experiences such as leading robotics classes, guiding school tours, helping with various STEM programs, and supporting special events like Rocket Fever, Family Nights, and the City of STEM Science Festival!

We encourage both working professionals and retirees to apply!

  • Age: Must be at least 16 years old.

  • Background Check: All applicants must pass a background check.

  • Commitment: Volunteer for a minimum of 6 months. Must be able to volunteer at events at the Columbia Memorial Space Center and greater Los Angeles.

  • Communication: Regularly respond to emails from Volunteer leads about availability and updates. Must be familiar with with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace.

  • Meetings/Trainings: Attend meetings and trainings (can be 1-2 hours long).

  • Physical Demands: Ability to lift and move 5-10 lbs, including but not limited to exhibit equipment, tables and chairs.

Applicants will be notified within 3-5 business days from their application submissions if they have been invited to attend an information session and interview.

After submitting your application, it may take up to TWO MONTHS before you can begin volunteering. Please take this into consideration if you are in need of volunteer hours or proof of volunteerism.
